The GLA:D ( Good Life with osteoArthritis : Denmark) program for hip and knee osteoarthritis was developed by researchers in Denmark and is now available in Australia. It is an education and exercise program consisting of an initial assessment, 2 education classes, 12 exercise classes, a 3 month follow up and a 12 month follow up. In Australia research and results of the program are conducted through LaTrobe University with Pine Rivers Physio & Sportscare being a locally accredited provider. In Australia this research has shown an average decrease in pain by 36 % , a reduction in the use of analgesia, a decrease in the perceived need for surgery and improved joint confidence.
This program aligns with the Royal College of GP’s Guidelines (www.racgp.org.au ) that exercise, education and weight management should be the first option for treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis.
